Ashland, OR) — Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens Thursday, January 19 at 5 p.m. with a new exhibition Pushing the Press: Contemporary Printers Redefining the Medium. Curated by Josef Zimmerman, Head Adjunct Curator of New Contemporary Art at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, this exhibition will feature artists Tom Huck, Bill Fick, Carlos Hernandez, Dennis McNett, Morning Breath, Inc., Kathryn Polk, Sean Starwars, Chuck Sperry, Crystal Wagner, Ericka Walker, and Ravi Zuppa. This exhibition will be on view through April 29, 2023.
SMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared, “We are excited to put forth a Printmaking exhibition, exposing our audiences to this artform as well as the culture that seems to pervade the artists who work in this medium. Printmakers are unique artists in that they work with tools like a sculptor yet produce images like those who draw or paint. The exhibition is broad with some pieces being extremely detailed, some elegant, some bold and vibrant as well as examples of how printmaking becomes three dimensional. The work is fun and exciting and I believe our audiences will enjoy the exhibition.”
An opening reception will take place Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 5 to 7p.m. Curator Josef Zimmerman, Dennis, McNett, and Kathryn Polk will be in attendance. Music will be provided by Ed Dunsavage and wine will be provided by Weisinger Family Winery. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The Museum will be closed on Saturday, January 21 for a private event.
Prior to the opening, Artist Dennis McNett will hold an artist talk on Wednesday, January 18 in the SOU Meese Auditorium directly across from the SMA at 3:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.
New Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on display in the Entry Gallery. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free, but a $5 donation is suggested.
