Business Finance: Managing By The Numbers
by Marshall Doak, SOU SBDC Director
We regularly solicit feedback from our client businesses in order to increase the quality of our services. Gratefully, we have a high response rate and we are able to develop programs to address the requests we receive. One area we consistently receive requests to provide education and training in is business finance. For this reason, we start off the second month of 2019 with two very important presentations geared specifically to help your personal and small business finances. (continue)
The Keys to SMART Goal Achievement Success
by Todd Tippin, SOU SBDC Business Instructional Advisor
In last month's newsletter, the concept of a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) strategic plan was shared. Development and faithfully focused implementation of a SMART plan will build better companies with better profits.

In a two-part article, Small Business Management instructor Todd Tippin further develops these ideas and suggests a solid plan of action and a plan for execution.

Local Entrepreneurs Receive Funding Guidance
Through SOU SBDC and Close the Deal
One role of SOU's SBDC is to help entrepreneurs put together a plan and the paperwork necessary when the time is right to purchase a business. Elycia and Daniel Moore jumped on an opportunity to purchase Talent Market and Liquor Store but needed a solid business plan and the financials to make it happen. Fortunately, they found their answer in SOU's SBDC. "We were thrilled with the [SBDC} responsiveness to our needs and that they expedited the work required to make the purchase in the amount of time we had," said Daniel. "Marshall's level of professionalism and commitment to getting our business plan and financials together was literally as if he were the one opening the business."

After the plan and paperwork were presented to their lending institution, the Moores received funding, and purchased the business, all within a two-month time frame. They excitedly plan for Day One, when a complete reset of the store will start to make the operation more efficient and profitable. "We know we have a lot of work ahead of us to make the changes we want to make but are thrilled to be able to have the opportunity. It is important for our family that we deepen our commitment to the Talent community."
There is a lot of misinformation out on the street when it comes to financing your next "greatest business start-up idea." The SOU SBDC receives many calls from hopeful entrepreneurs thinking there is a silver bullet just for them--a magic grant exists that will help fund their business idea because "I am a veteran/woman/minority/disabled"...the list goes on.

In "You Want to Start a Business--How Should You Finance It?" by Mark Abell, Senior VP for NBH Bank, some strong doses of reality mixed with sound financial guidance are presented.

Really want to go for it in 2019? By attending the two SOU SBDC February workshops, you can start getting your financial house in order then get the funding you deserve.
