First Tuesdays Pub Talk: The Second KKK in Southern Oregon’s Politics & Society

Jeff LaLande, Archaeologist, Author, Historian and Southern Oregon University Adjunct Professor, is the First Tuesdays Pub Talk guest speaker, February 5, at the Four Daughters Irish Pub in Medford. Jeff will talk about the Ku Klux Klan who, in the early 1920s, was a very powerful force in local politics and social interactions. Southern Oregon’s unique experience with the Klan brought some unwanted national notoriety to our region. Yet, that same local experience was also simply part of a much broader KKK movement in 1920s America. The KKK's quite successful business model was built upon the relentless stoking of public fears over the religious, ethnic, and racial differences of the time.

First Tuesdays Pub Talks are a series of free monthly historical talks sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society, held the first Tuesday of the month upstairs at the Four Daughters Irish Pub, 126 West Main. Talks begin at 7:00 p.m. and last approximately an hour, with ample time for questions and discussion afterwards.
