Sundays at Hanley Farm, August 19, 2018: The Ashland Amphibious Fire Engine!

Throughout the summer, Hanley Farm is open on Sundays for picnics, house tours, and self-guided tours of the farm and gardens. And, every Sunday we offer an additional attraction - August 19 we’re pleased to welcome the Ashland Amphibious Fire Engine. Retired firefighter Phil Kessler and Historian Ben Truwe will be on hand to talk about the restored fire engine and its unique history.
The engine acquired its curious nickname in the 1948 Ashland flood; as the engine crossed the bridge at the entrance to Lithia Park, the bridge collapsed, and the engine was unceremoniously dumped into the creek! After being “rescued,” the engine’s motor was overhauled, and in the mid-1970s it was purchased by a Medford resident. In 1992 the engine was polished for the last time and used in a wedding. Until it’s donation to the Southern Oregon Historical Society, the fire engine had been stored in Shady Cove.
When the fire engine was donated to the SOHS last spring, an all-volunteer effort began to return it to service. Complete disassembly by an Ashland garage was necessary to remove the sand which had penetrated all the parts and recesses of the pumper. Restoration complete, the Amphibious Fire Engine made its debut in the Ashland July 4 parade!
