In the 1840s, explorers, miners, and adventure seekers came through the Rogue Valley, followed by tens of thousands of settlers drawn by available fertile land and a temperate climate. As the new settlers faced a hard, primitive way of life, thousands turned around and went home. Only the strongest, hardest working of the lot stayed on to carve out homes, farms, and ranches. Some of their descendants continue to ranch here in the Rogue Valley today. “Heritage Ranch History: The Charley Brothers” is the story of one of those families: Floyd, Leland and Claus Charley.

Lecturer Patsy Charley Edwards grew up in Central Point when it was a small, rural community and graduated from Crater High School. She and her husband, Dr. John Edwards, have lived and worked on several large western ranches. She currently researches, writes, and records stories for the Heritage Ranch Project, an initiative of the Jackson County Cattlewomen and Stockmen’s groups that aims to record early ranch history in our area. She is currently at work on the 4th Heritage Ranch History.

The monthly “Windows in Time” lunchtime lectures are offered free to the public on the first and second Wednesday throughout the year from 12 noon – 1:00 p.m. The talks are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services. For more information, please call Jackson County Library Services at 541-774-6996 or visit jcls.org.
