Autumn at Hanley Farm

Autumn has always been a special time. Farmers have long placed scarecrows in their fields to keep the birds from eating up the grain before it can be harvested. Scary stories in the dark of night have been practiced for more than 200 years in rural America. The Southern Oregon Historical Society is pleased to offer these traditional fall rituals: Hanley Farm’s ever popular Scarecrow Festival, October 7 & 8, 10am-3pm; and October 7, 8 & 15, 6pm-9pm, visitors follow lantern bearers through the dark fields of the farm, and experience the story of little “Max & the Monster.”

Scarecrow Festival:

• Admission is FREE! Activities include wagon rides around the farm, pumpkin painting, apple bobbing, and old fashioned children’s games. AND, everyone gets to vote for their favorite scarecrow in the Scarecrow Field. There will be food for purchase or, if you’d like, bring your own and picnic on the lawns.

• You’ll also want to make a traditional, straw-filled scarecrow to protect your fields and gardens. You can take your scarecrow home immediately, or enter it in the People’s Choice Scarecrow Contest. Your family’s scarecrow may very well be the winner of the People’s Choice award: a family membership in SOHS!! Scarecrow-making kits are $15 each ($10 for SOHS Members) and include everything you need to create your scarecrow. Trained scarecrow-makers are available to help out if needed.

• And, be sure to tour the 1875 Hanley farmhouse - $5 for adults ($3 for SOHS Members and Children, ages 12 and younger).  As docents guide you through the home, they share stories of the Hanley family and their belongings.

Haunted Field Drama: Little Max & the Monster:

• This year’s haunted field walk features an original play, “Max and the Monster.” Actors from Crater High School’s Renaissance Academy bring the characters to life, providing the audience with a bit of a fright and plenty of surprises! Tickets are $8 for adults ($5 for SOHS Members and Children, ages 12 and younger). Gates open at 6pm; tours begin at 7pm, and every 8 minutes thereafter. Follow your guides through the dark fields of the farm and experience the story of little Max and the monster snark, a great furry beast with “bad breath and a snout like a bird!” As you await your tour, relax in the pavilion, enjoy the activities we’ve planned for you, and if you’d like, purchase cookies and popcorn.

• Tickets for this event sell out quickly, so we recommend you purchase tickets and reserve your tour time online at sohs.org/max_and_monster, or at the gate. Gates open at 6pm each night.

Haunted Field – Special Bonus!
• Purchase an annual SOHS Family Membership for only $50 by October 15 and receive four free tickets for the Haunted Field Walk! Go to sohs.org/membership-hf-tickets, or call 541-773-6536, ext. 202 to purchase a membership.
