KOBI-TV NBC 5 / KOTI-TV NBC 2 win National Award for Southern Oregon Meth Project
On Monday, June 8th 2009 the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) is hosting the Celebration of Service to America Awards in Washington, DC to recognize the extraordinary efforts of a total of five local television and radio broadcasters in serving their communities. One of this year’s winners of the 11th annual Service to Community Award is KOBI-TV NBC 5 / KOTI-TV NBC 2 recognizing the Emmy Award winning Southern Oregon Meth Project.
Bob Wise, Vice President / General Manager of KOBI-TV NBC 5 / KOTI-TV NBC 2 stated, "This is a wonderful announcement from the National Association of Broadcasters, and a proud moment for our entire staff, and our incredible partners with the Southern Oregon Meth Project. We are truly honored to be recognized for the effort we, and our partners, have put forth".
The project is a unique partnership between KOBI-TV NBC 5 / KOTI-TV NBC 2 and a group of businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Determined to stop the first time user, the project focuses on educating children between the ages of 11 and 18 to not use methamphetamine - "Not Now… Not Ever."
“I know first hand the slow prgress we made in our efforts to prevent the initiation of use and to build community awareness of the problem before the Southern Oregon Meth Project. I have also witnessed the momentum created by the Southern Oregon Meth Project. This has been essential work, work which has been more influential on the meth problem than any single effort I can remember,” commented Rita Sullivan, Ph.D., Executive Director of OnTrack, Inc. for 31 years.
In addition to recognizing outstanding community service by local broadcasters, the Service to America Leadership Award, given for extraordinary public service in bettering the lives of others will be presented. The Award has been presented to Former President Bill Clinton, Quincy Jones, Sir Elton John, Former First Lady Laura Bush, Former First Lady Nancy Reagan, Former President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter, Her Majesty Queen Noor and Muhammad Ali among others.
The event is attended by members of Congress, FCC Commissioners and staff, corporate sponsors, philanthropists, members of the press and other government officials as they honor the exceptional public service contributions of radio and television broadcasters and local community service partners all across America.
