  • Indigenous Peoples' Day 2017 Ashland Oregon

Southern Oregon University (SOU), the City of Ashland, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), and Red Earth Descendants (R.E.D.) are pleased to invite you to join us for the first annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration in Ashland, Oregon.

The City of Ashland, Southern Oregon University, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival are built on the lands of the Takelma and Shasta peoples, located near the Klamath Basin region that is the home and ancestral territory to many tribes and bands, and established in a state that recognizes nine sovereign tribes. Further, Indigenous communities add to the cultural fabric of our community and contribute to many activities throughout the year including powwows, celebrations, lectures, conferences, community outreach, classes, grassroots social/environmental activism, and intergovernmental relationships. Following the lead of SOU students, we have an opportunity to learn, listen, and remember. We will use this day to tell the whole story about Columbus’ legacy and celebrate the historic, cultural, and contemporary presence of Indigenous people and their contributions to the world.

A collaboration between Red Earth Descendants, Southern Oregon University, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, SOU Native American Studies, and SOU Campus Theme.

  • Oregon Shakespeare Festival: Off the Rails, 8:00 PM
15 S. Pioneer Street, Ashland OR 97520- OSF Bowmer Theater

A sin to save a brother’s life: Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show is in town holding auditions, and the regulars at the Stewed Prunes Saloon are hoping for a shot at stardom. But plans change when Momaday, a Pawnee teenager, is sentenced to hang for his forbidden love affair with an Irish-American girl. Captain Angelo, the presiding officer, won’t budge . . . until he lays eyes on Momaday’s sister, Isabel. This irreverent, subversive adaptation of Measure for Measure—described as “Blazing Saddles meets Shakespeare” and OSF’s first play by a Native American writer—uses healthy doses of humor and music to illuminate the painful legacy of Indian boarding schools in the American West. Show length is approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes, including one intermission.

Box Office: (800) 219-8161 or purchase online at

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will provide free tickets to Off the Rails to Native Americans that evening. To reserve tickets, contact Carolina, Cultural Connections at or call (541) 482-2111, ext. 295.
