January 23, 10am to 2pm, the former J.C. Penney’s building, located at the corner of 6th and Central in Downtown Medford, will be open to the public for walk-throughs and a “Repurposing Sale” of excess office items, furniture, and books. Enjoy this historic building and shop safely as Covid 19 protocols will be observed.
The Southern Oregon Historical Society invites you to explore this classic, “California-Modern,” building. When opened in 1946, the building was hailed for its “ultramodern appearance.” Step back in time and view this historic building as post-war shoppers did, with its spacious central hall, interior balcony and adjoining office areas.
For almost 30 years, Penney’s welcomed shoppers dressed for the shopping experience, a time when ladies wore gloves as they browsed the store’s wares, and transactions were handled by containers exchanged by vacuum tubes with a central cashiering office.
For almost thirty years, Penney’s served Southern Oregon shoppers. In 1986, Penney’s became one of the anchor stores at the new Rogue Valley Mall. Three years later, the Southern Oregon Historical Society bought the building to serve as its regional center.
Currently, the SOHS is preparing the building for mixed commercial and historical society use, including plans for a new regional museum. Join us January 23, explore this historic building, and view the many items available for sale. Proceeds from the sale of these items will go towards the SOHS goal of bringing life to history through programs, events, activities. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you January 23!
