Dancing People Company (DPC) is Ashland, Oregon's cherished dance company. It is the only professional full-time modern dance group in all of Southern Oregon, so the honor and responsibility of providing first-rate dance performances all year long for our community is significant. Founded in 1994 by artistic director and choreographer Robin Stiehm, Dancing People Company is dedicated to presenting high quality, innovative modern dance that appeals to a wide variety of audiences. Originally based in Minneapolis, the company relocated to Ashland in 2003. The five artists of DPC perform the directorâs witty, evocative and entertaining contemporary choreography. Combining fluid movement with strong structure and beautiful partnering, DPCâs work speaks volumes about the human condition.
DPC has performed at prominent venues around the world, including the Mussorgsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia; the International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Poland; the Aichi Auditorium in Japan; and the International Festival of Modern Choreography in Belarus, plus performances throughout Minnesota and Oregon. In the summer of 2012, the company will once again be performing in Russia at the OPEN LOOK International Dance Festival. DPC is proud to represent Southern Oregon and the U.S. at this festival of international dance artists.
There are many places in town where you can see the professional performances of this amazing company. DPC performs at their spring Salon Series; the OSF Green Show; summerâs Dance in the Park, a free event at the Butler Band Shell; and other special performances around town. In addition to professional performances, DPC creates community-based workshops and performance pieces that empower through movement and creativity. In Ashland, this includes the Winter Solstice celebration, âCall Back The Sunâ. In other areas in the Rogue Valley, DPC teaches, creates and interacts with a variety of community groups, including K-12, college students, seniors and at-risk populations. DPC has a strong high school program, in which the company spends two weeks at each school teaching, rehearsing and choreographing, then performing with the students at the projectâs culmination. This school year, DPC will work with students in Central Point, Eagle Point, Ashland and Grants Pass.
