I ate at SSB one time when passing through town.
The 350 ale is one of the best micro brews I have ever tried. Most micros are way too hoppy for my taste. Drinking them can be a chore. There is nothing wrong with making a tasty, drinkable beer.
The lamb pita is one of the best pub concoctions I've ever had. It was delicious. The pitas are made on site and they alone are worth 5 stars. I decided to get dessert since pastries are homemade also. It too, was delicious. Fresh fruit, homemade: pastry filling, whipped cream and a crust.
It is a little pricey. I spend $37 after tip on two beers, dinner with a salad and dessert. As for service, the waitress was friendly and attentive, and everything came out on time. Great experience overall!
Best meal we had in Ashland.
The specials list was impressive and was a mini-menu in itself. Sadly I was not too hungry so had a lite meal: house salad and soup. The house salad was not your average boring house salad but rather a nice blend of greens with candied walnuts and blue cheese crumbles. There were 5 soups to choose from, impressive, from which I choose the lentil soup. The lentils were blended which was a surprise but very good. Washed it all down with a margarita.
Great food, all local and sustainable, a huge number of beers, attentive service, excellent cooking. Everything you could want in a restaurant. If you don't go, you will be missing out.
My wife and I stayed the night in Ashland on a trip from Los Angeles to Seattle. Standing Stone was the perfect spot to have some beer and excellent food. I highly recommend the beer sampler. It is a great deal, and it will help you pick your favorite beer if you are still thirsty afterward. I liked their reguar IPA and they had a Brandy Stout that was very unique and flavorful. On to the food!
I had the sauteed mushrooms as an appetizer. They were spicy and heavenly! My blue cheese burger on foccacia bread was so delicious, I couldn't stop myself from vocalizing my satisfaction with many "mmms"! Great service and atmosphere to boot. Five stars for this great surprise in Ashland!
Wonderful lunch with amazing service. Stopped in on the half way point of our road trip expecting beers and sandwhiches. It was so beyond our expectations. Everything we had was from the specials menu of the day. Steamed clams with homemade chorizo in IPA, fresh shucked oysters on the half shell and wood fired proscuitto and apple pizza with pesto. Incredible.
We happened to read an article on the Standing Stone in a AAA magazine right before leaving on a roadtrip that would take us through Ashland. Being as into breweries as someone under the legal drinking age can be, we had to make it a stop. The man operating the front desk of our bed and breakfast told us where and when to go - no reservations, as is standard, so we expected to wait.
After 10 or 15 minutes we were seated in the large back dining room. Nice atmosphere, a lot of patrons. There is a disco ball, speakers and a stage for dancing and live music on certain nights of the week. The menu was, to me, phenomenally overwhelming. Your typical pub fare served in surprisingly organic and often vegetarian-friendly twists, featuring local produce, as well as enticing specials of the day. Even the pre-dinner bread comes with both a tasty tomato spread and some delicious garlic butter. For dinner, I got a tempeh veggie wrap which was, quite possibly, one of the best wraps I have ever had. My father said the same about his club sandwich (a topic on which he considers himself an authority).
We considered Standing Stone such a success that we altered our roadtrip so that we would arrive in Ashland in time for lunch on our way back. This time we were seated in a quiet little annex off the main dining room, and our waiter was quite friendly. I ordered a blackened chicken salad which, as I remember, included arugula, bleu cheese, a marionberry vinaigrette and some other tidbits that only my tongue remembers. It was the best salad I have ever had. The arugula was local and mindblowing (starting my long-winded love affair with that particular piece of greenery). The rest of our party was similarly satisfied.
Overall, a must-stop if in Ashland. Good food, good service minus a small wait time at peak hours, and the possibility of a good live show. Will definitely be making a return journey.
